Ukraine to file lawsuit against Russia with ICJ
The Ukrainian Justice Minister, Pavlo Petrenko, stated in an interview with the Ukrainian 5th Channel that Ukraine will file a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice against Russia for supporting terrorism (ICJ). “The next year will be associated with the initiation of a major lawsuit before the International Court of Justice, which is the principal judicial arm of the United Nations (UN),” Petrenko stated.
The Minister of Justice stressed that the evidence has already been collected and that pre-trial communications with the Russian Federation are close to concluding. The ICJ has received several complaints from Kiev against Russia. On the 4th of August, Kiev announced the filing of the fourth interstate lawsuit against Russia with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
According to Petrenko, the complaint concerns the alleged human rights violations in the territory of Crimea, including those committed against Crimean Tatars. Additionally, Ukrainian authorities intend to issue a demand for a $50 billion compensation package for damages to the Crimea and the Donbas region from the Russian Federation with the International Court.
On the 2nd of June, the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Justice, Natalia Sevostyanova, reported that Ukraine will demand the foreign property of Russia as compensation for the economic losses caused by the annexation of Crimea.
