Poroshenko expects Moldovan President Dodon to recognize the annexation of Crimea as illegal
On August 28, at the meeting with the leaders of foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine, the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko announced on August 28 that he expects the President of Moldova, Igor Dodon to recognize Russia’s annexation of the Crimea as illegal.
“We now have very fruitful relations at the intergovernmental level. The Moldovan President is well aware of my expectations regarding clear support of the independence of our state, including the Crimea. We expect a firm position from our neighbors as well,” the President of Ukraine stressed.
President Dodon is known for his pro-Russian views and is considered a friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has yet to comment on these statements.
During the meeting, President Poroshenko stated that he expects the documentation needed to start the process of terminating the Treaty on Amity, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia.
International organizations have recognized the annexation of the Crimea as illegal and condemned Russia’s actions. Western countries imposed a number of economic sanctions. Russia denies that it illegally annexed the peninsula and calls it “the restoration of historical justice.”
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially declared February 20, 2014 the date of the beginning of the temporary annexation of the Crimea and Sevastopol.
