Poroshenko, Merkel, Macron to meet in Germany in May
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron plan to meet in May in the German city of Aachen, Mrs. Merkel announced at a briefing on April 10.
“The Ukrainian President will be in Aachen and we might have a meeting,” she said to journalists regarding the possibility of a meeting in the Normandy Four format in Aachen. “We’ve already discussed this. Mr. Macron will be there too, and myself. But this of course will not be a meeting of the Normandy Four because it requires four participants and the Russian President will not be in Aachen. The three of us will exchange thoughts on further steps. But this will not be a Normandy Four.”
Previously, the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported on the possibility of a meeting of the Normandy Four leaders on sidelines of the Charlemagne Prize award ceremony, which is given for input to the unity of Europe. This year, the Prize will be awarded to the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
As it was earlier reported, the last meeting of the Normandy Four leaders was held in autumn of 2016. This meeting did not bring any significant results. Since then, the Normandy Four negotiations have been seldom conducted, and at a lower level.
