Ukrainian President proposes to prohibit Russian Black Sea Fleet from staying in Crimea
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has submitted a bill on changing the country's constitution to the parliament. This bill bans military bases from hosting military groups within the international treaties framework, said representative of the Ukraine President in the Verkhovna Rada, Irina Lutsenko , reports 112.ua news website.
According to her, this bill proposes to exclude constitutional provisions that allow leasing of the military bases in the territory of the country.
"It concerns the presence of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the territory of the Crimean peninsula, which is Ukrainian. Accordingly, the President will make such proposals, "she said.
In addition, Poroshenko decided to consolidate the European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Ukraine in the constitutional provisions.
In March 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin submitted the bill on the denunciation of the agreements with Ukraine regarding the Black Sea Fleet to the Russian State Duma. In April of the same year, this document was approved by the Russian Duma signed by Putin.
In March 2014, after the annexation of the Crimea, the main base of the Black Sea Fleet on the peninsula was transferred to Russia.
The internationally recognized Ukrainian territory of Crimea was annexed by the Russian Federation in March of 2014 in the wake of the Ukrainian revolution. The Kremlin has faced international condemnation for its annexation of the Peninsula, leading many western countries to impose economic sanctions against Russia. In the United Nations, only Afghanistan, North Korea, Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Syria recognize Crimea as a legitimate federal subject of Russia.
