Ukrainian President: Russia uses same hybrid war methods as it did a hundred years ago
On Monday, January 22, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko took part in the opening ceremony of the exhibition dedicated to the centenary of the proclamation of the independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic held in the Kyiv National Museum of the History of Ukraine.
During the event, he delivered a short speech, which once again drew parallels between today's events and the events of the Ukrainian revolution of 1917-1921.
"I would like to remind everyone that Russia used the same methods of hybrid war against the Ukrainian state back then as they employ today. Look: the non-recognition of their military presence on the territory of the Ukrainian People's Republic, the official statement of the then Russian authorities, the creation of puppet pro-Russian "republics" recognized only by Russia, as well as financial and armed support of the so-called insurgent groups. However, today we are much stronger, much more united, and much more experienced," the head of state said.
In the annals of history, on January 22, 1918, for the first time in the twentieth century, Ukraine declared its independence. The Ukrainian People's Republic or UNR lasted for three years. During this time, Ukraine created and approved the state border, money, language, symbols, and a capable army.
On its first anniversary of independence, on January 22, 1919, the UNR adopted the Act Zluky [on unification of Ukrainian territories] with the West Ukrainian People's Republic (ZUNR).
Thus, Ukraine celebrates two important historical events on this day: the first proclamation of Ukraine's independence and the Day of Unity.
