Poroshenko: Ukraine will buy Russian gas on its own terms
President Petro Poroshenko has said that Ukraine is ready to resume gas purchases from Russia.
"What has happened in the past two years? We are energetically independent. They [Russia] are knocking: can you take our gas? No, we are all right. If it is cheap and honest, not corrupt, [then] please," he said during a working trip to the Odessa region, writes Interfax-Ukraine.
At the same time, Poroshenko stressed that, with respect for the above-mentioned conditions, the Ukrainian authorities are ready to take such a step "in order to reduce tariffs for our people."
According to the decision of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, Ukraine must resume the purchase of Russian gas and select and pay for 5 billion cubic meters of gas for the last two years of its contract (2018-2019).
November 25 was two years since the last day Ukraine imported volumes of Russian gas. The rejection of Russian gas due to high cost allowed Ukraine to start reforming the gas market and the corporate governance of Naftogaz. The company itself has become profitable for the first time in a long time.
