Poroshenko: Ukraine will impose sanctions against organizers of Russian presidential election in Crimea
At a joint briefing with the Vice President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, President Petro Poroshenko said that Ukraine does not recognize the election for the President of Russia in the territory of the annexed Crimea and will impose sanctions against the organizers.
The President called on the EU to do likewise and impose restrictions on the organizers of the election.
“In the context of the Russian presidential elections next Sunday, I made it clear that Ukraine does not recognize fake presidential elections in the temporarily occupied territories. We are sure that it is necessary to introduce sanctions against those involved in the organization of this electoral process. I call on the European Union to do the same in response to the illegal so-called election,” said Poroshenko.
The Ministry of the Temporarily Occupied Territories and Internally Displaced Persons of Ukraine urged those in Crimea to not participate in the vote. The Prosecutor’s Office of Crimea warned that participation in the Russian election on the peninsula could lead to imprisonment.
The European Parliament decided not to send observers to the election in Russia.
