Russia to create two submarines equipped with cruise missiles
The Russian Ministry of Defense plans to build two nuclear submarines, which will carry cruise missiles. New submarines are scheduled to be delivered after 2027.
“The military department is considering creating two more Boreis (Borei-class submarines), equipped with long-range cruise missiles instead of ballistic ones,” writes TASS, citing a source in the Russian defense industry. Agency’s informer did not specify the submarine’s characteristics.
At the moment, the final decision regarding submarines construction has not been made. If the Ministry of Defense agrees to create two new submarines, they will be commissioned no earlier than 2027. Currently, there are three Borei project submarines in service in Russia. They are each capable of carrying 16 Bulava ballistic missiles.
