Russia warns US about serious consequences if a strike is made on Syria

Moscow warned the United States about “serious consequences” if Washington orders an attack on Syrian government troops in response to the alleged chemical attack on the Syrian city of Douma, as stated by Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, at a meeting of the UN Security Council.

He said that there was no chemical attack in the city of Douma. According to him, Russian specialists on radiological, chemical and biological defense did not find any traces of a chemical attack in the city.

“We have already conveyed to the United States, through the appropriate channels, that military action under a false pretext against Syria, where Russian troops are deployed at the request of the legitimate government of the country, could lead to serious consequences,” Nebenzya said.

On the evening of April 9, the UN Security Council convened a meeting at which the alleged chemical attack in the Syrian city of Douma was discussed. The United States, Great Britain and France hold the forces of Bashar Assad responsible, and Russia and Iran are accused of supporting the Syrian regime. The day before, Donald Trump threatened to make those responsible for the alleged chemical attack pay. He promised to take action within two days.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, speaking in the Security Council, said that Washington will “respond” to the attack, regardless of whether the Council approves of these actions. “We have reached the moment when the world should see justice done,” said Hayley to the members of the Council. “History will record this as the moment when the Security Council either discharged its duty or demonstrated its utter and complete failure to protect the people of Syria. Either way, the United States will respond,” said Haley.
