Saakashvili's lawyers file appeal with European Court of Human Rights over his expulsion from Ukraine
The defense of Mikheil Saakashvili, former Georgian president and leader of the political party Rukh Novykh Syl (Movement of New Forces), filed an appeal with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding his expulsion from Ukraine, his lawyer, Ruslan Chernolutsky.
"The documents have already been sent to the ECHR ... We will try to restore justice through European authoritative bodies," he said.
According to Chernolutsky, Ukraine had no right to expel a person under investigation from the country.
Saakashvili's defense is confident that Saakashvili will be returned to Ukraine in the near future.
On February 12, border guards deported Saakashvili from Ukraine to Poland for readmission procedures. From Poland, he flew to the Netherlands, where he received an identity card.
Ukraine earlier received a request from Georgia to extradite Saakashvili, where he has been sentenced to three years in prison in absentia.
Criminal proceedings against Saakashvili are also being carried out in Ukraine, where he is charged with receiving money from fugitive oligarch Serhiy Kurchenko (under Part 2, Article 256 of the Criminal Code, assisting participants in criminal organizations and concealing their criminal activities).
