Saakashvili's wife says that Kyiv is preparing to extradite her husband to Georgia
Interfax-Ukraine reports that Sandra Roelofs, the spouse of the Movement of New Forces Party (Rukh Novykh Syl) leader Mikheil Saakashvili, said on the Rustavi 2 television channel that the Georgian and Ukrainian authorities are preparing for the extradition of her husband from Kyiv to Tbilisi.
"I have no hope that the Ukrainian court, which is due to impose a measure of restraint on my husband tomorrow, will be fair. Most likely, the Ukrainian authorities have already told the court what decision it should make, and he will remain in custody. They may order a house arrest, but all that is being done to gain time and wait until the Georgian court pronounces a sentence on Misha [Mikheil Saakashvili], after which they plan to extradite him from Kyiv to Tbilisi,” the wife of the detained politician said.
The Tbilisi City Court is speeding up the case regarding abuse of office by Saakashvili during his tenure as president of Georgia.
Saakashvili’s party still does not know when the court will convene to choose measures of restraint for him.
Saakashvili was detained on December 8 and placed in a detention facility.
The Interior Ministry said that the politician was hiding in the apartment of a supporter, and that the operation to detain him occurred without casualties.
Later, the GPO was informed that the investigation into the Saakashvili case was completed, and that the court would require the former politician to be placed on house arrest and wear an electronic bracelet.
