The West blames Poroshenko for the failure to cancel electronic declaration for Ukrainian anti-corruption organizations

Western experts and observers hold the President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko responsible for the Verkhovna Rada’s failure to cancel electronic declaration for public organizations, reported Voice of America.

Earlier, the United States urged the Ukrainian government to strike down legislation that required electronic declarations of anti-corruption activists.

"It is an important and sad event. It will result in closure of a large number of non-government organizations. The reason is that the majority of factions of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc did not vote for substantive changes. Probably, the EU will react sharply to this,” stated Anders Åslund, a well-known expert on Ukrainian issues at the Atlantic Council.

A former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense of the USA, Senior Director of the Biden Center and Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council, Dr. Michael Carpenter expressed regret at the results of voting in the Verkhovna Rada. "It is a pity that politicians from the ruling parties spend more power on worrying about corruption in civil society than within their own ranks,” Carpenter stated.

On Tuesday, April 3rd, the Rada failed to support draft legislation that would cancel electronic declarations for anti-corruption public organizations. Only 156 and 157 deputies of the minimum necessary 226 voted for taking as a basis the relevant draft laws Number 6271 and Number 6674, respectively.

Earlier, President Poroshenko called on the Verkhovna Rada to cancel electronic declarations for anti-corruption organizations considering amendments to electronic declarations as a mistake.

Last week Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Regional Policy criticized the Verkhovna Rada for its refusal to cancel electronic declarations for members of anti-corruption public organizations.
