Ukraine ratifies the agreement on joint border control with Moldova

On Thursday, April 12, President Petro Poroshenko signed a law ratifying the intergovernmental agreement on joint border control between Ukraine and Moldova from October 6, 2017. Poroshenko signed the documents during his meeting with the Prime Minister of Moldova, Pavel Filip, who was in Kyiv for a state visit, according to the Ukrainian President’s website. The first joint control procedures were introduced in June last year at the “Kuchurgan-Pervomaysk” border crossing point.

During the meeting, Poroshenko and Filip discussed relevant issues of the bilateral agenda such as the signing of the agreement on the functioning of the Dniester hydro power complex, Transnistrian settlement, and medical treatment of children from the Donbas in Moldova.

They also agreed to increase coordination of positions within the framework of the eastern partnership to accelerate the process of integration into the European Union.

On March 1, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine ratified the agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the government of Moldova on the joint control of individuals, vehicles, goods and items at the joint entry points across the Ukrainian and Moldovan State border. The agreement detailed procedures for Ukrainian and Moldovan public authorities to monitor the border crossing points. It was concluded on October 6, 2017, in Chișinău.

Once this document enters into force, the previous agreement on the joint control at entry points between the governments of Ukraine and Moldova from 1997 will be terminated.
