Ukraine promises to prove Russia deployed electronic warfare systems to Donbas

Kyiv’s partners on all levels will receive evidence of the presence of four of the latest Russian electronic warfare systems in the Donbas, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister promised on Twitter. Earlier the State Department said that the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) had detected four such objects in the Donbas.

“Ukraine is going to present confirmed by OSCE SMM facts of the modern Russian electronic warfare systems presence in Donbas to the partners at all levels. Sanctions against aggressor-state must be reinforced,” the tweet reads.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry considers the presence of the Russian electronic warfare systems to be “evidence that Russia is once again resorting to escalation”. The department concluded with a statement that “sanctions against the aggressor-state must be intensified”.

On August 15, US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert reported that OSCE SMM had detected these systems in the Donbas, commenting that they constitute further evidence that the Russian military is “directing” the conflicts in the Donbas.

Moscow has repeatedly denied having regular Russian Armed Forces divisions in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier in May, Vladimir Mikheev, adviser to the first deputy CEO of Concern Radio-Electronic Technologies, said that within three years, Russia will create new electronic warfare systems. This will be done after analyzing the information on the use of the American Tomahawk cruise missiles in Syria. “Of course, on the basis of this experience [the strike in Syria] technical tasks for new operations are now being prepared, as part of which, taking into account all the acquired information, we will already build prototypes of our new electronic warfare equipment,” he stated.

He clarified at the time that the Russian equipment would cover all the frequency ranges observed in the American missiles. According to him, a complete work cycle on electronic warfare systems takes roughly two to three years. “For us, first and foremost as specialists, it is very interesting to observe the real use of different military technology in Syria, even against Tomahawks. With this missile in hand, we understand clearly what channels it has for communication, information transfer and guidance, navigation and location,” Mikheev explained.
