US Senate committee backs sanctions on Nord Stream 2
The US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has approved a bill to impose sanctions on companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2, announced Hanna Hopko, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada.
“The Senate committee has supported the sanctions against Nord Stream 2 with a score of 20:2 in our favor. I will remind you that these same sanctions will stop the Turkish Stream in the part of it that harms our transit, if it is built,” she wrote on Facebook.
The committee could have approved the bill earlier, but Republican senator Rand Paul, who is trying to prevent such sanctions, was able to delay the bill’s consideration by a week.
At the end of June, the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs ratified the bill to impose sanctions on companies involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2.
The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is designed to pass through the Baltic Sea and connect Russian suppliers to European consumers. If completed, it will have a total length of more than 1,200 km and an annual capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas. The project is being realized by Gazprom in conjunction with the European companies Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell and Wintershall.
