Widow of Slobodan Milosevic passes away in Russia
Mirjana “Mira” Marković, the widow of former Serbian President Slobodan Milošević, passed away in Russia where she had been living since the early 2000s. She was 77 years old.
One of her close friends, Milutin Mrkonjić, confirmed the news with the BBC News Serbian service. He added that the date and place of the funeral is still under discussion.
Belgrade media reported that Mirjana Marković died in a hospital in Moscow. BBC was unable to confirm this information as Moscow hospitals disclose information on a patient’s death only to his or her relatives.
The tabloid Blic reported that Marković’s cause of death was pneumonia.
Mira Marković was actively engaged in politics. Specifically, she led the Yugoslav Left Party and was considered one of Slobodan Milošević’s main advisers throughout his career.
In 2000, Milošević lost power and was handed over to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. In 2006, he died in his prison cell before the trial was completed.
In 2003, Mira Marković moved to Russia where, reportedly, she and her son gained asylum status. Serbian authorities put Marković on the international wanted list, but Russia refused to extradite Milošević’s widow.
