Lithuania called on Ukrainian politicians not to interfere with work of Anti-Corruption Bureau
Lithuania calls upon Ukraine to ensure the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) from political influence, as stated by the President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, at a joint briefing with Petro Poroshenko in Vilnius.
"Our main requirement for Ukraine is to ensure the independence of NABU in such a way that politicians cannot affect its work. At the same time, NABU should not in any way be involved in the political process," she said.
According to her, during a meeting with Poroshenko, they discussed Ukraine's reforms in the field of anti-corruption.
"Both the European Union and Lithuania support reforms aimed at combating corruption in all sectors. But these reforms must be open and consistent, must secure all public services from political influence, and law enforcement authorities should not be involved in politics," Grybauskaitė added.
She stressed that Lithuania also supported the demand to establish an Anti-Corruption Court.
Earlier, NABU stated that a "big plan" was implemented in Ukraine, the main purpose of which was the destruction of the NABU and the Specialized Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
The United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom have issued harsh statements in NABU’s defense, accusing the Prosecutor-General's Office and the Security Service of disrupting the Bureau’s operation and interfering with its work.
The European Parliament has also expressed support for NABU and called on Ukraine to consolidate.
