Dodon intends to ask NATO to confirm the Moldova's neutrality

Moldova’s President, Igor Dodon, said that at the February meeting with NATO leadership in Brussels, he plans to offer an agreement on the recognition of the Republic's neutrality by the Alliance.

"I intend to insist on the cancellation of the agreement on the opening of the NATO Liaison Office in Chisinau. Furthermore, in the Brussel meeting in February, I intend to offer an agreement on the recognition of Moldova's neutrality by the NATO," Dodon told RIA Novosti.

He stressed that "he intends to offer an agreement to the leadership of the NATO Alliance concerning the recognition of the country’s neutrality."

In November 2016, the Prime Minister of Moldova and the NATO Secretary General signed an agreement on the opening of a NATO Liaison Office in Chisinau. The corresponding document was later ratified by the Parliament.

Dodon has criticized the agreement, saying that he "intends to oppose any attempts to draw the Republic into the military blocs." However, the agreement entered into force before the Dodon's inauguration.

According to the Constitution, Moldova has a neutral status, but since 1994 the Republic cooperates with NATO within the Individual Partnership Action Plan.
