Georgia asks NATO for help with national security
Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili held a meeting with the head of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA) Paolo Alli. During the negotiations, Margvelashvili thanked Alli for supporting the Euro-Atlantic course of Georgia and the territorial integrity of the country, as well as holding a spring session of the NATO PA in Tbilisi. This was reported by the press service of the President of Georgia.
The meeting topics included the parliamentary session of the Alliance and cooperation between NATO and Georgia, as well as the situation in the country and ways to improve its national security.
The President asked to involve NATO experts in order to jointly develop recommendations for implementing constitutional amendments on improving the national security architecture of the country," the report said.
For his part, the Chairman of the Alliance's Parliamentary Assembly said that NATO "strongly supports Georgia's desire to integrate into Euro-Atlantic structures, as evidenced by the parliamentary session in Tbilisi, and spoke about the steps that can be taken towards Georgia's membership in NATO."
At the same time he expressed firm support for Georgia and noted that it is rare when a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic Alliance is held in a country that is not a member of NATO.
"Georgia is among rare exceptions, and this is not only a gesture, but a significant political step on the part of NATO," said Alli.
According to Alli, stability in Georgia is of great importance for the stability of the entire region.
"This is important not only for Georgia and Europe, but for the whole world, because we must ensure territorial integrity and respect for international law, and what is happening here is very important for NATO, Europe and, I think, for many other countries,” said the chairman of the NATO PA.
In July, Georgia will host a NATO military exercise, in which Ukraine will also participate.
