Head of the Pentagon believes that Russia knows that NATO is not a threat

US Secretary of Defense, James Mattis, in an interview with CBS said that NATO is not a threat to Russia, and stated that it remains a mystery why the Russians think differently.

"It's clear that NATO is not a threat," said Mattis, noting that Russia chooses strategic competition with the West. "But the point is that NATO is not a threat, and they know it. They do not doubt this," the head of the Pentagon added.

According to him, the new president of the United States, Donald Trump, intends to talk with Russia diplomatically, but this approach has weaknesses.

"Although we want to act using diplomatic means, we will have to face Russia when it comes to areas where they attack us, whether these are cyber attacks, or where they are trying to change borders with the help of the armed forces," the US Secretary of Defense stressed.

He also commented on the situation around the DPRK, noting that if it comes to war, it will be a "catastrophe."

"The conflict in North Korea would probably be the worst kind of fighting most people have seen in their lifetimes," Mattis said.
