Polish politician: Future of relations between Ukraine and Poland is 'questionable' because of Ukraine's interpretation of history
Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of Poland's ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS) believes that the future of Polish-Ukrainian relations is "questionable" because of the way Ukraine interprets its own history, in particular, the role of the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army).
He stated this on Radio Rzeszów in the Polish city of Rzeszów, the Onet web portal reported. According to Kaczyński, the future of Ukrainian-Polish relations depends on Ukraine’s attitude toward history. "Polish-Ukrainian relations today are called into question," he said.
"Not everything is determined yet: whether Ukraine will adhere to its position [in the formation of historical politics], which is considered unacceptable in Poland; whether [Ukraine] will base its historical legitimization on the UPA tradition, the tradition of the organization that committed crimes against the Poles, or whether they will leave this path."
Earlier, the Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said that Ukraine and Poland should develop a common vision of the historical role of the UPA and, in particular, the Volyn tragedy.
