Latvia recorded the presence of four Russian military aircraft near its borders
The Latvian National Armed Forces have recorded the presence of four Russian military aircraft in the Baltic air space. The information was published on the official Twitter account of the Latvian National Armed Forces.
“On the 29th of May, two Su-27 and two AN-26 were identified flying over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea near the territorial waters of Latvia,” the message said.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and the subsequent tense relations between the west and Russia, Russian military ships and aircraft are increasingly being identified near the air and maritime borders of the Baltic states.
In 2015, Russian military aircraft were spotted 270 times near the Latvian borders.
Even though Russia does not violate the air and sea border regulations of these states, their aircraft represent a real threat to civil aviation.
The Baltic states and the UK have repeatedly stated that these flights are a demonstration of Russia’s power and a way to test NATO’s response to these actions.
