NATO will not place its troop in Georgian ports

NATO will not deploy its troops in the ports of Georgia. Instead, the Alliance plans to ensure security in the Black Sea by forming a multinational brigade in Romania composed of military forces solely from NATO member countries. NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller announced this development following the session results of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

“At this stage, we do not plan to deploy NATO forces in Georgian ports. We really appreciate the relationship with Georgia in the context of the security of the Black Sea region in the sense that Georgia is more informed and provides the Alliance with information about this region,” she said while on the air at Rustavi 2 broadcasting company.

According to Gottemoeller, the Alliance's attention is drawn to strengthening the presence of NATO forces in the Black Sea basin. “This means that, for example, Romania leads a multinational brigade, which includes troops from Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and other NATO member countries,” she explained.

NATO command and staff exercises had already begun in Estonia and are currently underway.
