Romanian President: NATO has to maintain its dialogue with Russia while continuing ‘deterrence policy’ towards it
Klaus Johannis, the President of Romania expressed the opinion that negotiations with Russia on its actions in the region are possible only under NATO's “deterrence policy.”
“I think we need a dialogue, but we also need what we are working on in NATO, a powerful deterrence policy. Such a combination of deterrence and dialogue should lead to a solution that is acceptable to all parties,” Johannis said at a meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Johannis added that “Moscow’s aggression against neighboring states causes concerns in the region.” According to him, there is a need to “speak very clearly and frankly” in relations with the Russian Federation.
