Polish President says he is surprised that EU wants to continue being dependent on Russia's Gazprom
During an official visit to the Lithuanian capital, Polish President Andrzej Duda criticized Nord Stream-2, a gas pipeline between Russia and Germany that would bypass Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic states, Polskie Radio reports.
Duda said, "I want to express my surprise that the EU, particularly the more Western members, wants to become dependent on Gazprom, the Russian gas monopoly.”
He said, "We (Poland) have experience [with Russia]. We are also keeping an eye on the experience of Ukraine, against which the reduction of gas supplies is used as a weapon in the hybrid war being conducted against this country."
Duda emphasized that Poland is taking measures to reduce energy dependence on Russia, including opening a terminal in Świnoujście, in the north of the country, which receives gas from Qatar.
The Nord Stream-2 project includes the construction and operation of two branches of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
