Russian Ambassador to the US: Russia and the US must develop a closer relationship
Russia's new ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, said in an interview with Kommersant that Russia is interested in a constructive interaction with the United States. “Unfortunately, Russian-American relations in the past few years have seriously deteriorated because of the actions of the previous US administration," Antonov said.
He believes that the confrontation between Russia and the US is not promising, as there will be no winners in this confrontation. "As President Vladimir Putin has often said, it is not our choice, we have always been interested in constructive interactions with Washington regarding the entire bilateral and international agenda," the Russian ambassador said.
He is convinced that it is time for Washington to stop the anti-Russian actions and discussed the need for meetings between the leadership of the Russian and American special services to coordinate actions to combat terrorism.
"Strictly speaking, there are many available channels for interaction. The more we cooperate, the closer our countries become, and international security is strengthened ... It's time to look around and deal with the real security problems of the two countries, and not imaginary threats, the main threat being the fight against international terrorism," he said.
Antonov believes that to normalize relations between Moscow and Washington it would also be useful to resume the meetings of the Foreign Ministers and the Ministries of Defense of the two countries in the "2 + 2" format and establish cooperation between the Security Council of the Russian Federation and the US National Security Council.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that he believes in the normalization of relations between Washington and Moscow.
