Ukrainian Ambassador: We will seek for US to officially recognize the Holodomor as genocide
The Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, Valeriy Chaly, promised to request that Congress adopt the resolution recognizing the Holodomor as the genocide of the Ukrainian people, as he wrote on Facebook.
"Now we know that it was Ukrainians who rose up against this crime in defense of their families - and were deliberately destroyed. Today, in my speech before the witnesses of those tragic events, I stressed: it's time to officially recognize the Holodomor against the Ukrainian people as genocide. This was attempted once before, unsuccessfully. But we will again go to the US Congress to achieve truth and justice and to adopt the appropriate resolution next year," Chaly wrote.
The US State Department condemned attempts to deny the historical fact of the Holodomor in Ukraine, according to a statement posted on the website of the department on the occasion of the anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-33. The document says that the US supports Ukraine both in commemoration of the victims of the past and it is on its side in the context of present security and freedom from "external aggression and occupation."
In November 2006, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. Now the Holodomor is recognized by 24 countries across the world as genocide, and in a number of countries – by the authorities of their separate territorial units.
Ukraine, citing data from the scientific and demographic experts, claims that the total number of human deaths from the Holodomor of 1932-33 is almost 4 million people, and the loss of Ukrainians in terms of the unborn is more than 6 million.
