Ukrainian authorities detain and deport Saackashvili to Poland
The ex-president of Georgia and leader of the “Movement of New Forces” Mikhail Saakashvili was detained by the State Border Service together with representatives of the State Migration Service and other law enforcement agencies during the “investigation of certain places where there is a concentration of illegal migrants,” reported the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“While carrying out coordinated interdepartmental work, law enforcement officers found the stateless person M.N. Saakashvili in a public restaurant,” the report stated.
On Monday, the special forces of the State Border Service detained Saakashvili in a Kyiv restaurant, after which the politician was deported to Poland by airplane. Poland agreed to Ukraine’s request to readmit Saakashvili.
The decision took into account the fact that the wife of the ex-president of Georgia is an EU citizen.
On February 6, a final decision was made to deny Saakashvili the ability to register documents to be recognized as a refugee or a person who needs additional protection.
Georgia said that it would send a request to Poland for Saakashvili's extradition. He was sentenced in absentia to three years in prison.
