USA calls on Russia to punish perpetrators and instigators of Nemtsov’s murder
The United States calls on Russia to respect the basic rights and freedoms of citizens and to ensure the punishment of all involved in the murder of Russian opposition politician, Boris Nemtsov, as stated by the spokesperson for the United States Department of State, Heather Nauert.
"Three years ago, opposition leader Boris Nemtsov was assassinated just outside the Kremlin. As a leading figure of Russia’s democratic movement, a former Russian regional governor, and an Energy Minister as well as a Deputy Prime Minister, Boris Nemtsov committed his life to public service and the goal of a freer and more prosperous Russia. His memory continues to inspire the Russian people and many others around the world to engage in the difficult and sometimes dangerous struggle for just, democratic, and accountable government," the statement reads.
In memory of Nemtsov’s work and life, the USA renews its call on the Government of Russia to uphold its obligations to promote and protect universal human rights including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and freedom of association.
"We again urge the Russian government to ensure that all involved in this crime, including those who organized or ordered it, are brought to justice," the State Department stated.
Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov was killed on February 27, 2015, not far from the Kremlin.
Former Officer of Sever Battalion Zaur Dadaev, as well as Temirlan Eskerkhanov, Khamzat Bakhayev, and Anzor and Shadid Gubashev, are suspected of the murder.
On June 29th, a Russian jury found all five defendants guilty of Nemtsov’s murder.
On July 13, the Court sentenced the main suspect, Zaur Dadaev, to 20 years in a high-security prison colony and a fine of 100,000 Russian rubles ($1780 USD). Other suspects received long-term sentences.
