President Duda wants to secure Poland's membership in the EU and NATO in the Constitution
During the celebration of Poland’s Constitution Day, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that the state's membership in the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance should be added to the Constitution, reports Ukrinform. According to the opposition, the ruling party is against such a move.
“We have a constitution and we need to discuss any potential amendments. We should debate whether or not the EU membership should be included in the constitution and we must add a guarantee that we will be a member of his large union in the constitution. Personally, I am convinced that this should be the case,” Duda stressed.
The Polish President added that state membership in NATO should also be included in the constitution.
In turn, the speaker of the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS), Beata Mazurek, tweeted about the possibility of engaging in dialogue regarding this entry into the Polish constitution. At the same time, the leader of the oppositionist Civic Platform Party (RO), Grzegorz Schetyna, stated that Andrzej Duda’s statement regarding this issue “should not be taken seriously” since PiS opposes such a move.
Earlier, Duda said that NATO should strengthen its military presence in the Black Sea in order to demonstrate its readiness to pushback against any aggressor. According to him, NATO should take this issue as seriously as possible considering Russian aggression in Ukraine and the tense situation in the Black and Baltic Seas.
