Stoltenberg confirms funding for US army depot in Poland

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has confirmed that the alliance will allocate $260 million to the construction of a military storage site for the US forces in Poland, Polish Radio reports.

The base will be located in Powidz, and will house armored vehicles, ammunition and weapons for the American brigade.

Stoltenberg said that this investment from the NATO headquarters is of key significance due to the close proximity of a major military airport.

“This investment in infrastructure in central Poland is part of great efforts to strengthen military mobility. Thanks to the deployment of equipment in advance, we will improve our troops’ readiness for action. This concerns the ability to transport people quickly, and not just heavy equipment,” Stoltenberg noted.

He emphasized that the investment is a demonstration of NATO’s collaboration with the US.

“The American forces are stationed there on the basis of a bilateral agreement, but they are supported by NATO investments. This is good for NATO and for us all,” the secretary general added.

Recently, Polish President Andrzej Duda announced that Poland is willing to host more US troops. At present there are 4,500 American soldiers in the country.
